Welcome to the Dr. Robert Pavlica Authentic Science Research Program
Web site
The Science Research course is designed for the student who wishes to pursue excellence and move ahead into advanced areas of original research in a topic which the student selects. Work is supervised by Byram Hill faculty as well as researchers with expertise in the specific areas of interest. During this three year research program students develop skills in bibliographic research, research methodology and modes of communicating research. Students participate in large group classes, individual meetings with the Science Research teacher, and research with a student -selected mentor at a university, medical center or research institute. The work-load for this course is very high.

Because of the individual attention provided, course registration is limited and students may not be admitted the first time they apply. Priority will be given to students who demonstrate the following qualities:

1. A sincere interest in learning about research in some area of the natural or social sciences.

2. A willingness to be a self-starter and a highly motivated independent researcher.

3. A genuine desire to invest a great deal of time in exploring an area of interest.

Byram Hills Board of Education announces Dr. Donohue as new Superintendent for Byram Hills effective
Byram Hills Board of Education announces Dr. Donohue as new Superintendent for Byram Hills effective July 1,2012

After announcing the June 2012 retirement of Superintendent Dr. Jackie Taylor, the Byram Hills School District Board of Education announced the appointment of Deputy Superintendent Dr. William Donohue to succeed her. The board made the announcement at its meeting last night.
Dr. Donohue has been a member of the Byram Hills school community for more than 20 years; he first joined as director of guidance (K-12) in 1990, became principal of the high school in 1997 and was appointed Assistant Superintendent – later Deputy Superintendent – in 2008.

A key member of the district’s administrative team, Dr. Donohue has worked closely with Dr. Taylor for the past three years. “Bill Donohue is an excellent choice to lead Byram Hills on its continuous journey toward excellence,” said Dr. Taylor. “He is a magnificent leader with great intellect, and he has profound commitment and dedication to Byram Hills. I couldn’t be happier.“

Dr. Donohue’s appointment comes as part of a thoughtful and carefully executed succession plan developed by the board of education over the past decade. “The board of education is thrilled to appoint Dr. Donohue as its next superintendent,” said school board President Ira Schulman. “Dr. Donohue is a highly respected leader, and a thoughtful, articulate advocate for public education. We look forward to our partnership and maintaining the excellent education for all students provided by Byram Hills.”

As high school principal, Dr. Donohue witnessed the biggest enrollment expansion in the district’s history and was involved in two major construction projects to accommodate it. He oversaw the development of a full elective program, increasing options in every department and creating full opportunities in the Arts for the first time. Also, he increased the school’s AP options by 100 percent.

Longtime community resident and parent of five Byram Hills graduates, Chris Huguenot considers Dr. Donohue’s appointment as nothing short of “phenomenal.” Mrs. Hugenot has known Dr. Donohue since he first came to Byram Hills. “There’s no finer man in the district,” she said. “The students of the district have always been the cornerstone of any decision he’s ever made. He’s at his best when the students and families have needed him the most,” she said.

Dr. Donohue has a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Maryland, a graduate degree in counseling from George Washington University, another in administration from Harvard, and a doctorate in administration from Columbia. He is a member of the elite Headmasters Association, which limits memberships to 25 public school principals.

“I look at this promotion as both humbling and challenging,” Dr. Donohue said on his appointment. “It will certainly be my primary goal to maintain the academic excellence and strong leadership that have been the hallmark of the district and to help it face the economic challenges that are so apparent today.”

Byram Hills receives grant from NYSERDA for Clean Air School Buses.
June 4, 2009

The following information received by our Superintendent Dr. Jackie Taylor from our Director of Transportation, Guy Elmore is exciting news for the Byram Hills Transportation Department and the continuing efforts of our district in promoting sustainability.

On June 1st, 2009 the School District received notice from 'New York State Energy Research and Development Authority' (NYSERDA) that we are the recipient of a $236,880.00 grant for Clean Air School Buses. Our application was submitted to their Technical Evaluation Panel (TEP) comprised of in-house and external experts for an in-depth technical review, scoring and ranking.

The grant allows Byram Hills to retro fit 18 large buses with state of the art diesel particulate filters which will reduce harmful emission by up to 90%. I am especially excited with this grant since it is in keeping with the District's Green Policy. The work on the buses is expected to be completed before the opening of school in September.
